Prepare for a first quote

What details should I prepare before a first car insurance quote?

Prepare facts before you open a quote form. This does not make a policy valid or predict a price; it reduces the chance that you answer a question from memory when a document would be better.

Direct answer

Have the vehicle information, your licence status, the real pattern of use, an annual-mileage estimate, usual parking details and the records needed to answer history questions. Keep any uncertainty as a question to check rather than guessing.

Start with the vehicle record

GOV.UK says a buyer should have the vehicle registration, make, model and MOT test number, and should see the V5C registration certificate. A quote form may use a registration to identify a vehicle, but this site does not ask for it. If you do not have it yet, record the exact make, model and variant you are considering and mark the rest as still to check.

Separate facts from decisions

The facts are who normally drives the car, where it is normally kept, what journeys you expect to make and what documents you have. A decision about cover level, excess or a provider comes later. Keeping these separate avoids treating a preparation checklist as advice.

Make a short records pile

Quotezone says its car form asks for details about the car, annual mileage, name, age, address, occupation, driving history and previous claims. This is a description of its own process, not a universal list for every insurer. Put the documents you need nearby, but do not type personal identifiers into a general checklist.

Use the prep check for gaps

Our prep check only records whether a category is ready, needs checking or falls outside a private-car first-quote scenario. It does not save the answers, create a quote or send information to an insurer.

Use this checklist

  • Vehicle registration or exact vehicle description ready
  • Licence status and the date of the full licence checked
  • Actual main driver and additional drivers understood
  • All expected journeys and annual mileage estimated
  • Usual daytime and overnight parking described truthfully
  • Documents available for the provider questions you expect
